The Department of Mechanical Engineering at UFSC occupies a constructed area of approximately 20,000 m². It houses 24 laboratories used by Undergraduate and Graduate programs (Master, Doctorate and Post-Doctorate) in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Engineering.
Research and extension projects are carried out mainly with financial resources from the productive sector and from research support agencies linked to the Federal and State Governments

The Federal University of Santa Catarina was founded in 1960 and since then it has been one of the state driving forces.
Today it is the Brazilian institution of Higher Education best placed in the “citations” criteria by the international ranking of universities from the Times Higher Education, released in 2019. The indicator measures the influence of research and the role of the university in disseminating new knowledge and ideas.
